Plumpy'nut

The Wall Street Journal ran a front page article today detailing an advance in malnutrition treatment. (No link since they require a subscription--besides, it's not news, as you will see if you look around the 'net.)

Plumpy'nut is made by Nutriset, a company based in Malaunay, France. It is based on the peanut, a stable in Africa, and it does not require fresh water for preparation. Thus, Plumpy'nut, though made in France can be made in the field.

One such project to make the peanut paste in Malawi, Africa, is headed by Mark Manary, a pediatrition at Washington University, St. Louis.

The WSJ also mentions that Save the Children uses Plumpy'nut in Darfur, Sudan--an organization that N. Kristof at the NY Times has described as doing good work in the face of danger there.
